    A Message From The Chairman

At the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality women’s health care services. We’re also committed to training physicians who will continue to uphold that standard of care, and to supporting innovative research that can help shape the future of health care delivery.

We’re proud of our faculty, which includes physicians with specific interests in menopause, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, pediatric/adolescent gynecology, laparoscopy, and urogynecology. Our four-year residency program underscores a sound foundation in basic obstetrics and gynecology training, complemented by rotations through each of the department’s subspecialties. Residents gain diverse patient care experiences at both Palmetto Health Richland and William Jennings Bryan Dorn Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Our ongoing research efforts include a long-term project in the Division of Genetics that is studying the effectiveness of folic acid supplements in women who have previously had a baby with a neural tube defect. The project is a cooperative effort between the School of Medicine, the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and Greenwood Genetic Center.

Our clinical practice within University Specialty Clinics offers a full range of services. In addition to general obstetrics and gynecology, we are a referral source for subspecialty care in maternal-fetal medicine, ultrasonography, genetic testing, and genetic counseling. Diagnosis and treatment are also provided in urogynecology, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, clinical genetics, and reconstructive pelvic surgery.

Consultative services are available to assist practitioners with medical problems that aren’t encountered on a routine basis. Our teen clinic, established in 1989, focuses on the particular health care needs of young women through the age of 18.
