Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine! We are working together to carry out our mission to provide health care to women through education, patient care services, and research.
Our OBGYN residency program at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital is accredited for 16 residency positions through the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Medical students from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine are exposed to OBGYN education across the four-year curriculum through lectures, simulation, direct patient care, case studies, and through various research opportunities. Medical students complete a rotation through OBGYN during their third year, have the option of completing elective OBGYN rotations, and can join an active OBGYN interest group led by medical student leaders and OBGYN faculty.
We provide comprehensive ambulatory OBGYN patient care through our private faculty practice and through the OBGYN residents’ ambulatory care clinic. These practices are located adjacent to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. The private faculty practice operates under the legal name University Specialty Clinics – Obstetrics and Gynecology. The OBGYN residents’ clinic is known as the Palmetto Health Women’s Center. Detailed obstetric and gynecology ultrasound procedures are also provided at the Two Medical Park location. University Specialty Clinics – Obstetrics and Gynecology also offers private practice OBGYN care at our Northeast Columbia satellite office.
In patient hospital care is provided at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital with approximately 2300 deliveries per year and a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Palmetto Health Richland is the regional perinatal referral center for high risk pregnancy in the Midlands of South Carolina. Comprehensive GYN in patient care is also provided by our staff. Our students and residents participate and manage traditional abdominal gynecologic surgeries. We also offer minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and robotics.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology residents are involved in research. Research offers residents theopportunity to make scientific presentations at local, regional, and national meetings. The Department provides many ways in which interested medical students can become directly involved in OBGYN research projects. The Department supports interdisciplinary research by coordinating the annual Women’s Health Research Forum on the campus of the University of South Carolina each autumn. http://whrf.med.sc.edu/ This Forum provides opportunities for local research presentations by faculty, post-graduate trainees, and students.
Our department has much to offer. Please view our website and contact us for more information.
