Obstetrics and Gynecology

We work with Prisma Health Richland to help provide quality health care for women in South Carolina. Through this effort, we're also able to offer education and residencies that help train the next generation of OB-GYN doctors.

Medical Education

Medical students from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine are exposed to OB-GYN education across the four-year curriculum through lectures, simulation, direct patient care, case studies and through various research opportunities. Medical students complete a rotation through OB-GYN during their third year, have the option of completing elective OB-GYN rotations and can join an active OB-GYN interest group led by medical student leaders and OB-GYN faculty. We also offer a longitudinal 4th year OB elective with centering pregnancy, which is an opportunity for students to follow a Centering Group and be a part of each delivery.

Research

We take an interdisciplinary approach to research by working with the Arnold School of Public Health and other departments within the School of Medicine. Any interested medical student can get directly involved in our research. We coordinate an annual Women's Health Research forum on the USC campus each fall. Research is required for our OB-GYN residents, who present their projects at the forum.

Residency Program

Each year we offer 16 OB-GYN residency positions at Prisma Health Columbia.

During your residency, you'll have the opportunity to work with patients and be exposed to:

  • prenatal care and high-risk pregnancy care.
  • routine, well-woman gynecologic care.
  • benign gynecology / gynecologic surgery.
  • pediatric / adolescent gynecology.
  • family planning and contraception.
  • genetic counseling / risk assessment for diseases.
  • urogynecology / advanced pelvic organ prolapse repair.
  • reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
  • minimally invasive surgery.
  • robotic surgery.
  • gynecologic oncology.
  • centering pregnancy.
  • vulvar medicine.
