Job Description: Physician Researcher
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of
South Carolina School of Medicine is recruiting a physician researcher.
The candidate should be board eligible or board certified in obstetrics/gynecology
and willing to participate in both basic and clinical research and
clinical activities in obstetrics and gynecology. A minimum of 50%
protected time for research will be allotted. Salary is negotiable
based on rank and experience. Research experience and interests
should encompass aspects of precursors to cervical cancer/human
papilloma virus.
USC is home to a strong team of researchers engaged in studies
of both the basic molecular biology of HPV-mediated transformation,
and the molecular epidemiology of HPV persistence and HPV-mediated
disease. In addition, vigorous outreach and education programs on
HPV and cervical cancer are in place, supported by long-term extramural
funding. The environment is therefore conducive to a variety of
collaborative studies of HPV and cervical cancer in the clinical
and translational arena, using state-of-the-art techniques and methodologies.
The University of South Carolina School of Medicine, the Department
of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Palmetto Health Richland have
a variety of patients who are referred for evaluation of abnormal
PAP smears and other HPV-related diseases.
Gynecologic visits for the calendar year of 2005 were 7,024. During
the same period, we had 3,696 obstetrical visits. The total number
of PAP smears performed from these patients was 2,915, of which
481 were abnormal.
The Palmetto Health Women’s Center also serves as a referral
center for colposcopy and management of abnormal PAP smears from
the surrounding counties, the health department, and other physician
practices. This allows us a vast array of clinical experience for
our faculty and resident physicians and many opportunities for research.
Our faculty and residents have had several publications at meetings
in the last two years related to HPV diseases.
Faculty CV’s are available upon request of the applicant.
